Emerald Cathedral

Few waterfalls in Oregon are as instantly recognizable as Toketee Falls. Tucked within the forests of the North Umpqua River, its twin basalt amphitheater was formed by ancient lava flows that cooled into striking hexagonal columns before centuries of rushing water carved the canyon we see today.

While many visitors admire the falls from the overlook above, this view required a careful descent into the canyon, where the waterfall reveals itself from the water's edge. After a day exploring the nearby Umpqua Hot Springs, the journey ended here—standing beneath towering cliffs, surrounded by emerald moss, volcanic stone, and the constant roar of falling water.

Some places remind us that the greatest adventures begin when we're willing to step beyond the trail.

Viewed from below, the opening frames the endless sky beyond, transforming a simple rock formation into something that feels almost otherworldly. Like many of the wilderness' greatest features, it rewards those willing to leave the obvious path and look a little closer.
