Illumination Rock is named after the annual Mazamas "Illumination" climb, a Mount Hood tradition dating back to the early 1900s. Climbers would ascend the mountain carrying flares and lights, creating a glowing spectacle visible from Portland during summer celebrations. Today, at 9,400 ft, it is one of the most iconic formations on the upper mountain.
